Towards the end of 1981, Angelos Rouvas, while studying Architecture at the NTUA, makes his first appearance in animation with his “amateur” film Trial (5:30min, color), shot on super8, a study on the technique of animation, since he was self-educated. The film won the First Award (Best of Festival) at the Drama Film Festival.Īntonis Sakellariou creates his first movie titled Rain Shower (2:00min, color) where two clouds collide, creating rain. Behind them at a distance, a Municipal crew follows, gathering the trees that had been put up for the beautification of the city. When he reaches the highway, he sees in the distance people gathered on the pavements cheering and a procession of cars crossing the street. On one of his monotonous everyday routes upon reaching the usual highway on his way to work, the man is taken by surprise by his surroundings the street has been decorated with trees on each side of the pavements and he gets the impulse to enjoy it, thus on his way home from work he decides to go on foot instead of taking the bus as he usually did. Life goes by and these scenes keep repeating themselves with the only difference being that the man looks increasingly aged. Upon finishing, he crosses the same highway on his way back home. There, he mechanically carries out his work. A man crosses a highway of a big city everyday on his way to work. Nassos Vakalis, one of the most important Greek animators worked on this movie too for a short while, before he migrated to study abroad.ĭuring the same year, Markos Holevas in his second film titled The Official Guest (5:23min, color) negotiates the meaning of fame in a person’s life (produced by Stella Tsikra). The next year it was awarded at the Drama Film Festival, as well. His film won the Best Fiction Short – Animation at the Thessaloniki Film Festival 1981, as well as the Best Short Film award by the Greek Film Critics Association (PEKK) and by the Association of Film Critics in Athens (EKKA). The casting away of the gelatin technique and the designing of the characters and the landscapes on paper will characterize his work during the next decades. In his third movie The Circle (4:55min, color) Iordanis Ananiadis, the artist from Thessaloniki, comments on the cycle of a person’s life from birth to death with humor but solemnity as well. That year 4 short films were released, two of which were created by rookie artists. This acquaintance would produce results a few years later in the Animation Department at ERT, which was operated in a creative manner under their supervision for three and a half years (1987-1991). The film was shown in black and white by the national channel for quite a while and because of it they were acquainted with the emerging director Angelos Rouvas who, at that point, was preparing his first animation film. With this spot, ERT won the Third Award for Best TV Spot at New York Festival World’s Best TV & Films. It was intended to sensitize the citizens of Athens regarding the big garbage problem that was choking the capital. The sketches were designed by Christos Daralas and the music was overseen by Emilia Patsifa. The new decade starts with a (prophetic) film-cry!… It is a social message through animation, illustrated, directed and filmed at ERT, in 1980 by Thanasis Netas, titled Help (0:40min, color). A cry of exasperation brings about results.In this context, the face of Greek society gradually changed. At the other end of this decade, the fall of the existing socialism (1989) puts into motion important developments worldwide, whereas in Greece the political and institutional crisis of ’89 sealed a period deeply scarred by the political polarization, the constitutional disintegration and the business-political scandals. It was a year of great optimism, but halfway through the ’80s this feeling was gone. ![]() In 1981, Greece becomes the 10th equal member of the European Economic Community and in the same year the political party “PASOK” (Pan-Hellenic Socialist Movement) wins the elections in Greece with the broad slogan of “Change” (consolidation of democratic freedoms and the overcoming of the post-civil war state).
